Here is a list and links to really useful resources including some of the evidence behind what is said on this webpage.

Parent-infant skin to skin contact reduces the electrical activity of the diaphragm and stabilizes respiratory function in preterm infants. 2021. Authors: Juyoung Lee, Vilhelmiina Parikka, Liisa Lehtonen and Hanna Soukka.

This study found that preterm infants receiving ventilatory support exerted less breathing effort and their neural breathing was more stable during skin to skin care than in incubator care. These effects were more evident after 28 weeks gestation and during invasive ventilation than non-invasive ventilation. Also showed that skin to skin was safe in ventilated babies.

Kangaroo mother care had a protective effect on the volume of brain structures in young adults born preterm. 2022. Authors: Nathalie Charpak et al.

This study found that the neuroprotective effects of kangaroo mother care, for preterm infants, persisted beyond childhood and improved their lifetime functionality and quality of life. They found that the volumes of the main brain structures associated with intelligence, attention, memory and coordination were larger in babies who had kangaroo mother care.

Physiological responses to cuddling babies with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy during therapeutic hypothermia: an observational study. 2021. Authors: David Odd et al.

This study found that babies who had a CoolCuddle, target temperatures of cooling therapy, ventilation, cardiorespiratory and neurophysiological measures all remained within normal ranges. They found small effects (although not significant) on cardiorespiratory physiology and brain activity as parents cuddled their infants receiving cooling therapy. They also found a reduction in post-natal depression scores and improved breastfeeding for babies who had a CoolCuddle
